The idea behind :

Back in 2011, when I first visited Gran Canaria i was amazed by the island. It was early spring, april maybe, but coming from Denmark it really grabbed me.
Let me make it clearer to all of you who don't know about the specific nordic climate: Copenhagen - around 300 cloudy days per year, and about 330 cold ones.
In the short summer the daytime hours are close to 19 - it gets dark after 23:00 and light around 04:00, but this is only 2 months -July and August.
The other 10 months are not so bright, with winter hours of daytime being less than 7. Yes it is cold, windy, grey and dark, that's why we are here on Gran Canaria, right?

The funny thing about the weather in Gran Canaria.

The strangest weather can occur on Gran Canaria
The strangest weather can occur on Gran Canaria

So having a getaway from not so good weather is always nice and the weather on Gran Canaria provides exactly that...
BUT Gran Canaria is often called a tiny continent on its own... This is because on the southern part of it - meaning south form the Airport - the cities of Playa del Ingles, Maspalomas, Meloneras, Arguineguin, Puerto Rico, Amadores, Tauro and Puerto de Mogan are usually very nice and warm places, while the northern part(meaning north and north-west from the airport) like Las Palmas, Telde, Arucas, Galdar and so on are quite windy, dusty and not so pleasant year-round.
So if you have a limited amount of time( like the normal 7-10 days of holiday) and want to spend most of it being warm and enjoying yourself at the beach you need to know how is the weather right now at most of the good beaches.

So here we were with my girlfriend, on a vacation, at this warm tropical island heading to Playa del Ingles to enjoy a day of sun. But it just so happened that this day there, eventhough warm, was very windy and dusty. Climate here changes from warm(over 25 degrees) to cold (under 19 degrees) really quick and can ruin a holiday easily. The other thing about the Gran Canaria weather(or as a german person would say Gran Canaria Wetter) is that it is an absolute reality that the weather can be cloudy and windy at Playa del Ingles and at the same time it would be exactly the opposite at Arguineguin or Puerto Rico, being sunny and really enjoyable.

How to find the place with the warmest weather in Gran Canaria today?

Finding the best weather in Gran Canaria is easy with!
Finding the best weather in Gran Canaria is easy with!

So how can one see the weather on Gran Canaria and actually get a precise forecast for the resort they are in?
Well, the interent, of course! BUT If you just ask any major search engine for "gran canaria weather" or "weather in playa del ingles" you would most likely end up on a webpage that has a ordinary weather forecast, taken from Las Palmas, being the major city with the main weather station on the island is. It is though very often irrelevant to weather conditions on the southern part of Gran Canaria, where most of the beaches are.
So where to look? Well, see for yourself - through a webcam, live and with your own eyes. When you plan where to go today - open up  and just look at the weather cameras, transmitting live video, showing the conditions - sunny or cloudy, cold or warm, windy or calm.

Never again waste a day when on holiday here! Check the cameras live every day and pick the resort or beach with the best weather today. We hope Gran Canaria Weather, wetter in german, will be of good use to all sun-lovers!

More about Gran Canaria

There is a lot to see and do on Gran Canaria!
There is a lot to see and do on Gran Canaria!

Gran Canaria delivers all-year-round sun with pretty small seasonal variations. Summer here is hot, usually dry but winters don't get a lot colder and only present a few rainy days.
Gran Canaria is the third largest of the Canary Islands and has its own nickname - "Island of Eternal Spring". The Canary islands are located far down south from mainland Spain, close(just 200 miles) to the west coast of Northern Africa and Morocco. Canaries are located on the same latitude as the Sahara desert, and that makes them much hotter than mainland Spain during the winter. However, the islands are not so hot than one might be expect at this latitude because of the surrounding ocean, the cold Canary Current and the trade winds blowing to the northeast.
Gran Canaria is a volcanic island with very rocky and mountain-ish relief. The high mountains in the centre of it create noticeable regional variations in climate and surface. The northeastern parts of Gran Canaria are cooler, windier and wetter than the southwest as the mountains trap winds. But the temperature difference is usually only a couple of degrees at the most, the bigger difference in the 'feeling' comes from the winds.

The higher parts of the mountains have an 'alpine' climate with cooler temperatures and higher rainfall through the year. This variety of microclimates earned Gran Canaria the nickname "small continent". The contrast in weather conditions is most notable during the winters when there usually is a lot of snow on Pico de las Nieves(the highest point on Gran Canaria) and 25°C heat on the beaches down the southern part of the island.

Seasons on Gran Canaria

Seasons on Gran Canaria are not what you are used to!
Seasons on Gran Canaria are not what you are used to!

Summer is considered from May till October, it is hot and sunny with only a few or no cloudy days. Average temperatures remain in the high 20s, reaching peaks of 35°C from August till October. At the beginning of the summer at night temperatures might fall to around 19°C and in November the average low goes around 18°C, but for the rest of the season it usually around 20°C or above at night, keeping it comfortably cool. The northeastern winds help keep these higher temperatures in coastal regions making them very comfortable. The western side of Gran Canria can sometimes be affected by the "Scirocco", a hot, dry, dusty wind that originates from the Sahara desert. This raises temperatures above 30 degrees, brings a hazy sky and often even clouds of dust and sand. When hot and dry weather stays long, forest fires can occur, like the ones in 2007, when forest fires did extensive damage to Gran Canaria and Tenerife.

Rainfall is low at the start of the summer and totally absent from June till August. September often presents with a few violent and soaking rainstorms, the odd storm can be expected in October and November but not guaranteed. Sunshine levels stay at around nine hours per day are enjoyed during the summer here. They decreases a little from October and November. In November you can still enjoy seven hours of sun per day. The ocean temperature peaks around September or October at 23°C and it is always warm enough for comfortable swimming.

Winter, being from December to April, is pleasant and warm with cool nights. Average high temperatures fall to around 24°C for the whole season during daytime, being a bit colder in January at 22°C. Average lows go down to around 15°C in January and February.
Nights are generally cool and might make you switch from shorts to jeans for the evening activities. Rainfall is again low and gets lower as the winter progresses. Sunny  hours stay around six or seven per day. Water temperature almost doesn't drop below 19°C. Snow falls only in the mountains, 2000 metres above sea level, making it possible to enjoy snowy views from the warm beach during the winter.

The different conditions on Gran Canaria created equally different landscape. There is anything from desert patches to green and lively tropical forests and from palms to alpine meadows and the typical Canary Pine. On Gran Canaria there are things for everyone - from seaside resorts, pubs, bars, nightclubs, golf courses, secluded beaches, coral reef, numerous routes for hikers and climbers, recreational activities, golf courses and many water and motor sport opportunities.

Because Gran Canaria is neighboring North Africa, the island is affected by African weather conditions. While it is this responsible for the island’s enviably hot climate, it also means dust storms can occur caused by strong winds coming in from Sahara.
In February and March the most dust storms occur. When you see it approaching, it is good idea to stay inside, as the dust and sand seriously irritate the eyes and affect breathing and asthmatic or any other respiratory conditions. These storms reduce visibility, often to 1000 metres or less and they can lead to flight delays or cancellations.

Being in Gran Canaria during these months avoid the storms by staying on the south-west part of the island because the mountains will block most of it. Apart from the dust storms, sometimes there are waves of hot, hazy and dusty air invading the atmosphere raising temperatures. The locals call these hot periods "Calima" and they are described by very hot air getting 'stuck' and making life very hot for a while. They don’t last more than 3-4 days, but air conditioning is a nice thing to have at that point.

The optimum weather conditions year round are provided by the southern parts of Gran Canaria. With plenty of sun and enjoyable weather, that part of Gran Canaria sees little to no rain fall. Heavy rain fall is not common here but in the mountains.
